Don't Just Be, Be There
2015 MYANMAR FLOOD RAPID ASSESSMENT & EMERGENCY RELIEF (7 – 14 AUG)
Background
7 August, 2015 Heavy seasonal rains caused flooding in Myanmar. On 31 July, the President of the Union of Myanmar issued a statement declaring natural disaster zones in Chin and Rakhine states and in the Sagaing and Magway regions indicated that it would accept international assistance.

Nu Nu Pan, one of our Disaster Relief Workshop student in 2013 and also a leader in Calvary Care Myanmar (CCM), has initiated a relief efforts by gathered some fund and a group of volunteers in Mandalay. The main objective for this effort is to send food supply to a remote area in Magway. Initial assessment has done by the local church and reported with 400 household in Hta Naung Khone village.
CREST Malaysia has released USD 5,000 to respond for this climate. CCM has raise 50 household emergency packs (contained of food, clothing and hygiene items). They has purchase additional 350 packs by borrowing money from friends and relatives. Each pack cost USD 10 included the cost of transportation.
2011 MYANMAR EARLY CHILDHOOD CARE DEVELOPMENT CENTER (11 - 15 DEC)
Trip in 2011 by Crest to Myanmar for the followup on Early Childhood Care Development Center (EDC) and post Cyclone Nargis development in the land of Myanmar.
In 2008 Cyclone Nargis made landfall in Burma/Myanmar. It was a devastating storm that killed over 138,366 people and caused at least $10 billion (USD) in damage. The hardship on the people living there was immense in a situation where life was already hard. CREST responded with different relief efforts through local partners.
2016 LIVELIHOOD FOLLOW UP (25 – 2 JUL)
Background
After Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 and Hagupit in 2014 CREST Malaysia and our local partner Omega Emergency Respond, The Light House, World Harvest Fellowship, Agape Rural Health working together for livelihood projects in Bogo (Cebu), Tacloban (Letye), Balagawan (Sourthen Letye) and Hernani (Eastern Samar).
2017 SEGAMAT FLOOD RELIEF (03-04 FEB)
Background
25 January 2017, heavy rains were non-stop in the area of Southern Peninsular Malaysia and causes 70 evacuation centres opened in Johor and 8,204 people from 2,427 families evacuated from their home. State Health and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat said Segamat district was the worst affected with 6,609 people (2,012 families) and the number of evacuation centres opened in Segamat district had increased to 50.
On 24 January 2017, 7.39am, Crest has received alert from the weather focus team and same alert has forwarded to our local partner Vincent Teo Chin Wah, the founder of Persatuan Kebajikan Kasih Segamat, our previous relief partner in 2011 and 2006 flood.
2017 KELANTAN & PAHANG FOLLOW UP (27 - 3 MAR)
Background
24 December, 2014 as Monson session in East Malaysia, heavy rains were non-stop in the area of Peninsular Malaysia and causes 5 states went into disaster emergency respond. During our relief operation, CREST has establish network with the local community. In Kelantan, Kota Bharu, Guchil Kuala Krai and Manek Urai Kuala Krai. In Pahang, Kampong Telang.
2014 TYPHOON HAGUPIT RAPID ASSESSMENT & EMERGENCY RELIEF (16 – 27 DEC 2014)
Background
2 December, 2014 Typhoon Hagupit local Philippines named Ruby has formed. 2 days after, it become into Super Typhoon category 5. Subsequently, Hagupit begin weakening before making landfall in Eastern Samar as Category 3 typhoon.
When Hagupit turns into Super Typhoon, local government has issue Zero Evacuation policy, around 1 million population has taken their shelter in evacuation center, school, churches and government building to prepare for the worst to be happen as the local community has already experienced from another Super Typhoon – Haiyan a year ago.
CREST Malaysia has provided financial aids to our local partners before the typhoon making landfall in Philippines. With the balance from Haiyan respond fund, CREST Malaysia has agreed to provide USD 3,000 each for our local partner in Cebu (Arapal Church Camp) and Tacloban (Omega Disaster Relief – RASFI) to stock up food and water supply or immediate needs after Hagupit landed. Hagupit first made landfall over Dolores, Eastern Samar on 6 December.

1 Basic Wilderness Search & Rescue Survival Camp, Raub.
It has been a long time since CREST had conducted wilderness training. On 17-18 March, 15 participants pitched their own tents at the basic wilderness survival, search and rescue practice. We are grateful to you for your prayer covering and to God for our safety throughout the training.

Many lessons learnt in the classroom were put to practice. To the participants, I hope you will remember the lessons as well as the fun. To the facilitators, thank you so much for being such an awesome team in your service.

How have you been doing this far as the Executive Director of CREST? This question was asked by Lana Wong, who had served in the same position the 10 years before me. Her question left me speechless and my mind just went blank. I shook my head and answered that without God’s grace and mercy, I would never have been in this position to serve Him. Never, never and never…
In answering this simple question, I am counting my cost to follow Jesus. In fact, we are all doing the same thing, only in different ways. We shall not give up no matter what challenges and obstacles lie ahead of us. I give thanks to God for He has enabled and provided for us to serve the nations in Crisis.

As this New Year and Chinese New Year was being celebrated everywhere, CREST has been kept busy monitoring the weather for Kelantan and Johor. During both new year eves, we received alerts from our friends and CREST has sent aid to empower our partners in Kota Bharu and Segamat.
