Background
In November 2017, a flood hit Penang. The local churches seek assistance from CREST and CREST responded in clean-up and distribution operations at Zoo Road Ayer Itam, distribution of wardrobe furniture to residents of Taman Senangin Prai as well as donation of school tables and chairs to SJKC Chung Hwa 3, Prai.
Background
Following the door to door assessments done in Taman Senangin, Prai, CREST placed an order for 400 units of wardrobes (1770mm x 480mm x 101mm, 43 kg) with a supplier in Kuala Lumpur 1 month ahead of the delivery date. Prior to the distribution, a team of volunteers was deployed to verify the address and to distribute notification letters to the recipients.
It was difficult to recruit volunteers this time. However, we thank God for the 10 volunteers from Kuala Lumpur and Selangor and 20 more from Penang.
Background
Based on assessments done in Taman Senangin and Kampung Mainroad, CREST has decided to distribute wardrobe furniture in the area as by requested majority of the residents.
Background
CREST has nurtured good relationships with locals in Zoo Road due to previous activities in the area. However, we have also decided to extend our help to a neighboring Malay Kampung off Zoo Road 3, Ayer Itam. Prior assessments had already been conducted and we have identified an area of need amongst the community in the form of electrical appliances. Meanwhile, the Tamil speaking community of Taman Senangin located in Perai of mainland Penang had previously requested for help as they had received minimal help since initial flooding earlier in November.
Background
After the distribution in Zoo Road, CREST received request for aid from the Tamil speaking community in Taman Senangin, Perai. This community informed that they had not received any help following the recent flood.
Objective
1. To conduct need assessment together with the local Tamil Methodist Church at Taman Senangin, Perai. Our assessment will focus on post-flood recovery.
Background
The cleaning and garbage disposal team Nov 6 to 9 noticed that nearly 90% of the furniture and electrical appliances were destroyed by the floods and strewn along Zoo Road, Air Itam. To restore the local residents to their activities of daily living, CREST will distribute Senheng cash vouchers.
Furniture vouchers distribution is another planned activity when a reliable distributor can be identified.
Background
On 5 November 2017, heavy rain in Penang island and mainland caused sudden flooding in several areas. Local news reported that flood water levels at Jalan P. Ramlee and Jalan Terengganu water level reached waist level at about 6pm. CREST and HISTeam immediately deployed personnel to do rapid assessment.
2 rescue boats from Port Dickson and 2 container-load of food and water were arranged by CREST and a private company to meet the immediate needs requested by the local government.
