January – March 2024
1. Flood Response in Kelantan, 2nd January
CREST continues to meet the villagers, assessing recovery needs and strengthening our working relationship with APM and other NGOs. We accompanied the Kelantan Chinese Chamber of Commerce on their assessment rounds and distribution of food. We wish every success for the government mitigation projects and speedy recovery for all Malaysians affected by floods.
2. Flood Response Kota Tinggi, 13th January.
Even though, some of us are trained in international disaster response, small acts of kindness can carry great significance to the local communities. CREST team did just that. They carried out debris, wash swept the mud away and chatted with the affected residents.
Like many others, these contributions will not win awards, only hearts of the local communities. It will not make news but it will leave a lasting impression on those who lost their belongings to the flood waters. Indeed we salute the many nameless NGOs and governmental agencies here who worked tirelessly to restore normalcy to the people in Kota Tinggi, Johor.
3. Post Flood Response Kelantan 29th January.
CREST puts the risk reduction measures into action with our collaborative partners in humanitarian action. With APM, the Archdiocesan Office for Human Development AOHD, and corporate donors, we gave disinfectants for the flood evacuation centres in Pasir Mas and Rantau Panjang. Discussions with the local villagers were crucial for the design and number of rafts needed to protect the electrical and valuable items in the event of a flood.
All these preparations are essential for preparedness and will mitigate the devastating effects of the flood waters. CREST acknowledges the importance of emergency responses but will focus on risk reduction and adopt a longer-term vision in disaster management.
4. Roundtable for Effective Flood Management and Responses in Cities, 26th March
CREST attended the roundtable workshop organised by the British High Commission in Petaling Jaya. This event was graced by the Minister of Local Housing Mr Nga Kor Ming. Effective flood management and responses in cities to floods were discussed. In addition, managing flood risks by leveraging finance for business resilience in our local context were looked into. This session was attended by academics, NGOs and government representatives. These discussions were extremely relevant to the work in our organisation.
