April – June 2024
1. Kampung Kuala Telang, Pahang
After eight years, CREST team revisits our disaster risk reduction projects at Kampung Kuala Telang near Kuala Lipis. This village exemplifies the model village in eco-tourism and community-based disaster awareness and response. The villagers have been self-sufficient and grown groundnuts and maize in communal plots. Fish aquaculture activities were seen along the river.
We took measurements and examined the rafts assembled in 2016. They had been deployed twice during the floods to preserve electrical items and furniture successfully.
The proactive and harmonious approach to disaster risk reduction is largely responsible for the success of the villagers. The lessons learnt from this model village can indeed be replicated in other flood prone areas. The success is not attributed to our organisational abilities but rest mainly on the resourcefulness of the communities in implementing their own collective ideas.
2. Tabletop Exercise on Industrial Disaster Management, Penang

CREST was represented at the table top exercise for industrial accidents. It was jointly organised by the Disaster Management unit of the Penang state secretariat and NADMA. These simulation exercises are essential for promoting interoperability dialogue among government agencies responding to industrial accidents. The goal is to promote disaster preparedness and optimal response when crisis occurs in industries. Penang state government should be commended for taking this proactive preparations in contingency planning.
3. Methodist Young Leaders’ Conference

CREST participated at the recent Malaysian Methodist Young Leaders’ Conference: A Renewed Leader at the Methodist Center Port Dickson from June 12 to 15.
CREST set up a booth displaying our twenty years in disaster areas for young leaders at the Methodist Centre Port Dickson. Risk reduction ideas were promoted to encourage the church to be involved in areas of disaster response and management..
