Background After Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 and Hagupit in 2014 CREST Malaysia and our local partner Omega Emergency Respond working together in livelihood project in Letye and Samar. Project 1 – 10 x Pedicabs in Tacloban (Update by Omega 3 April, 5 Pedicabs have paid in full) Project 2 – Pedicab beneficiary – Ramon extended his business to Micro Enterprise Project 3 – Pedicab beneficiary – Mr. Merchol / Mark extended his business as pedicab spare parts supply and repair.
Objective
1. Visit Bogo, Northern Cebu invited by Omega for their shelter for street kids for possible livelihood project.
2. Visit Barangay Hernani, Borongan, Samar under the organisation – World Harvest Fellowship for women sewing livelihood project.
3. Visit Barangay Balagawan, Silago, Southern Leyte under the organisation – Agapa Rural Health for seaweed farming.
4. Follow up with current livelihood projects.

Kids in The Light House Center

According to Collyn, the kids are spending P 2,800+ a month just for transportation expenses to school. This expenses have not included any additional travelling such as, extra curriculum to school, Sunday church service and daily household travelling. Collyn has proposed a livelihood project with tricycle. We can see the need from the center, church members and the community.
The center is calling for volunteers to be able in teaching of dancing, singing, English class, drawing, making soft toys, and sport.
Result: With the remaining fund collected from the livelihood projects, Collyn & CK Cheong has agreed to start this livelihood project monitor by Collyn. All maintenances and responsibilities is by local partner (Omega / Collyn).
A new tricycle (estimated cost at P 130,000) with a driver from partnering church to start a livelihood project with repayment of the said amount within 3 years.
Each month P 3,600 for 36 months and P 400 on 37th month.
2. World Harvest Fellowship (WHF), Hernani, Borongan, Eastern Samar.

Background: Pastor Samuel started a home cell church with 5 families before typhoon Haiyan. During emergency, he has received relief and help from the Singapore churches. Today, the church has grown to 100 members.
Possible livelihood: Sewing, Tricycle, Mini Store
Sewing – started by Singapore group, Mini Store – too many stores in the Barangay.
Possible livelihood: Tricycle, there are 4 tricycle drivers from the members of the church are looking forward to this program.
3. Agape Rural Health (ARP), Barangay Balagawan, Silago.

Background: 5 days after Typhoon Haiyan, medical relief team from ARP has arrived with the leadership of Dr Elizabeth Santillan. After the emergency response, ARP team and the local community have started seaweed farming with initial capital P30, 000 for 32 members. However, two times they have failed to harvest due to lack of skill.

Dr Elizabeth Santillan has contacted Bureau of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources (BFAR) located at Guiuan, Eastern Samar, and 261.5km from Balagawan. 8 members have send to this center for half day seaweed farming practical training.
BFAR equipped the members with skills, tools and seeds. Unfortunately, the seaweed has affected by the common disease – Epiphytes. The local people call it as ‘ice-ice’ because you can see the seaweed attached by some white patches like ice.
Tools for 20-25 Kgs of Seaweed farming:- - floaters - nylon code #300 - 1 roll of rope - 4 x water jug for 100 meters - 1 roll of soft tie - 1 post of sack (5 sacks per post) - Seeds (P7 per kg, type = spinosum)
Planting: - for each 100m, it can produce 300kg of seaweed per harvest - once a week, member need to perform cleaning to avoid other plants grow together with the seaweed.
Challenges: - Tacloban is too far (125.7km) - not enough volume to sell to Tacloban City (minimum pick up is 1 ton) - extension for seaweed dryer is need to produce 1 ton per harvest - transportation cost to Tacloban is P 5,000 per trip
4. Ridge View Housing Project, Cabalawan, Tacloban (Pedicab Driver – Ramon Verzosa)

Background: Ramon Versoza is the first beneficiary completed his repayment for our pedicab livelihood project. He and his family has relocated to permanent shelter in Barangay Cabalawan, 6.5km away from Tacloban City. This housing project is expected to accommodate 1,000 families for Haiyan survivor.
His wife, Marilyn Versoza a full time house wife, taking care of 3 children wanted to help in Ramon’s household income by selling ice cube in the community. She has secured a verbal contract with a store for 20 ice cube a day with selling price at P3 / ice cube.
Retail price per ice cube in the barangay is P5 / ice cube.
To perform this business, she need a freezer. We have study the situation as below:
Minimum ROI per day = 18.89 ice cube per day P 1,500 (Loan per month) + P 200 (Electric per month) / P 3 (Ice Cube) / 30 Days
Therefore, they have to sell 20 ice cube per day for ROI (Loan, Electric, Water)
Result: Freezer has purchased with agreement from all parties by using the existing fund collected from the existing livelihood projects. (See Appendix A for signed agreement)
Niel will collect P 1,500 from Ramon monthly.
Ramon’s wife, Marilyn Versoza has paid the 1st instalment (P 1,500) for April 2016 from her saving to Niel during the delivery of the freezer on 20 April 2016.
5. Barangay V&G, Tacloban (Pedicab Driver – Melchor Montano / Mark)

Background: Mark start his second livelihood as pedicab spare parts trading and servicing reseller. During our last visit back in Nov 2015, we have approved his request up to P 5,000 for initial capital from the collection. On 14 Dec, 2015, Omega has released P 3,000.

Mark reported he has sold all his spare parts to 14 pedicab drivers, however all are in ‘otang’ debts to him. He requires more time for collection and he suggested to sell his current ‘Crest-Omega’ (already paid in full) at P 7,000. Then, purchase a second hand pedicab at P 4,000 and returning the remaining P 3,000 to Crest / Omega.
Result: We have come into agreement in present of Mark, Neil and CK Cheong. Mark will remain his current own pedicab by paying P 10 a day for 300 days to clear his debts with us.
Recommendations
1. Tricycle for World Harvest Fellowship (WHF), Hernani, Borongan, Eastern Samar.
Terms and Conditions with Beneficiary
a. The tricycle will be the properties of CREST-WHF, provide livelihood to the community as rental basis. b. WHF will decide on the beneficiary selection. c. The rental per day will be 30% of the total income by the beneficiary. 70% will be taken home by the beneficiary. Therefore, the beneficiary must be honest about his daily income. d. The beneficiary will upkeep the tricycle all maintenances, franchise fees (annually) and LTO (annually). e. The beneficiary shall not re-rental to other person regardless on any condition. f. For any predictable disaster or issued early warning, the beneficiary shall return the tricycle back to WHF for safe keep. g. A logo of CREST-WHF will be printed on the tricycle and the beneficiary shall not remove or repaint it. h. The beneficiary shall purchase the tricycle with an offer amount that acceptable by the beneficiary, WHF and CREST. i. Beneficiary shall not perform any illegal activity or crime using the said vehicle that offend against the local country laws and uphold the Bible principalities. j. CREST-WHF reserved the rights to take back the tricycle if the beneficiary has misconducted any clauses stated above.
Terms and Conditions with WHF
a. WHF must have a log book for all income b. WHF has to submit their collection report to CREST once a month via email c. 30% of the collection, 10% goes to church mission fund, 10% for saving, 10% for disaster preparedness and emergency use. d. WHF needs to inform CREST in written before utilize the funds. e. WHF shall report to CREST immediately for any lose or stolen or damage to the vehicle.
